[Q17] LUGARES RELACIONADOS / Related places: ABBA

¡Felices vacaciones!

Let's see, we're going with this summer's quiz. Another Abba related place, where is it? The clue: it's a very typical place to go by at this time of the year. Let's see who guesses well. Unless you guess it before... you've got until August 31st. Happy holidays!

[Q16] LUGARES RELACIONADOS / Related places: ABBA, ALEXANDRA DISCO, STOCKHOLM, ("VOULEZ-VOUS")

We solve the month's quiz. We said it was back in the headlines because of the release of the "VOULEZ-VOUS" Deluxe Edition. Our related Abba place was the Alexandra Disco, in Stockholm, where the photos of the album sleeve were taken. Also there the "DANCING QUEEN" video was shot. It's not a disco now.

[Gold] OMD: ORCHESTRAL MANOEUVRES IN THE DARK

OMD

In the year when everybody's coming back, and even more... with compilations, tour or new albums, these couldn't be missing out. Another mythical band from the 80s: the Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, that is OMD, in short. Founded in 1978 by Andy McCluskey & Paul Humphreys as the visible tandem, the rest of the line-up has changed throughout the time. This line-up went on until 89. Between this year and 96 McCluskey continued alone with the group's name. In 2007 they reformed for concerts, now in 2010 they announce a new album for this autumn "HISTORY OF MODERN". All this is worth a Gold to remember their hits on video.

SCISSOR SISTERS

The American band Scissor Sisters are premiering a brand new album "NIGHT WORK" and a new single "FIRE WITH FIRE". They formed in 2001. Their style draws from disco, glam rock, pop and the club scene of New York City.
The group consists of vocalists Jake Shears and Ana Matronic, multi-instrumentalist Babydaddy, lead guitar/bassist Del Marquis, and drummer Randy Real. While experiencing only limited mainstream success in their homeland of the United States, the band has been hugely successful in Europe, Canada, Australia, and particularly the United Kingdom, where they have achieved a number of chart hits, with their debut album becoming best-selling album of 2004 in the UK. Their single "I DON'T FEEL LIKE DANCING'" was the fourth best-selling single in the UK in 2006 and stayed in the UK top 40 for 27 weeks. The band claims to be influences by Elton John, ABBA, the Bee Gees, Blondie, Duran Duran, Supertramp, David Bowie, Kiss, Queen, Chic...

ABBAMANIA, AUSTRALIA

ABBA, Australia, 1977

By this time, the second stop of Abbaworld will have already opened, after London, today it opens at Federation Square, in Melbourne. It'll remain open there until October 31st. Why Melbourne, Australia is the second stop? Well, we suppose because Abba broke out collective hysteria down under during their 1977 visit, only to compare with the Beatles' in Europe a decade before. We enclose an article on the subject and a video from "ABBA, THE MOVIE" with footage of their stay there.

"A SWEDE SENSATION"

[Simon Plant]

For a few dizzy days in March 1977, four charismatic Scandinavians were the toast of Australia. Thousands of us wanted to see them or be seen with them.
And as Benny, Bjorn, Frida and Agnetha criss-crossed the country, singing their humungous hits, there was only one word on everyone’’s lips: ABBA
""We have probably never received such a rapturous reception anywhere,"" Agnetha said later. ""It seemed the ovation would never end.""
This week, with the opening of Abbaworld at Federation Square, that mad, far away time is vividly recalled through costumes, videos and memorabilia.
The monster-sized exhibition –– direct from London to Melbourne –– is crammed with super-trouper treasures. And some of them relate directly to ABBA’’s legendary Australian tour.
""It was very profitable for everyone,"" promoter Paul Dainty remembers.
But the man who brought ABBA Down Under –– and is now hosting Abbaworld –– got more out of the experience than just money, money, money.
""What I learnt from that trip was how to deal with a tour that was an event, not just a tour,"" he said.
Australia’’s love affair with ABBA started in 1975 when three of their songs –– I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, SOS and Mamma Mia! rocketed up the charts.
Exposure on Countdown turned the Swedes into stars and by 1976, when they visited Australia to record a ratings-breaking TV special, Dainty sensed a wave of interest was turning into a tsunami.
met (ABBA band managers) Stig Anderson and Thomas Yohansen and we hit it off straight away and worked out a deal pretty much in that meeting,"" he said.
The deal was perfectly timed. In early 1977, Australians of all ages were humming Fernando and Dancing Queen and the scene was set for pandemonium on a scale not seen since the Beatles hit town in 1964.
""It was almost Beatlemania all over again,"" Ian ‘‘Molly’’ Meldrum remembers.
Dainty says ""it was mayhem. Good mayhem"".
The madness began as soon as Abba landed at Tullamarine Airport and climbed into a black Rolls-Royce. The road into the city was lined with fans and thousands swirled around Melbourne Town Hall where they attended a civic reception.
ABBA fan Michael McAlpine, 16 at the time, was up the front and remembers: ""All four of them turned and waved to us. The screaming was just out of this world.""
Abba played three concerts at the Myer Music Bowl and Dainty says ""it turned out to be the right choice. The shows were magical.""Abbaworld at Federation Square officially opens on Saturday.
