FRIDA & OLIVIA: DOS BUENAS AMIGAS /Two good friends

De moda están las fotos que comparan dos momentos del pasado más antiguo y más reciente. Hoy traemos dos fotos que muestran lo buenas amigas que son Frida y Olivia Newton-John desde que se conocieran en Eurovisión en 1974. Coincidiendo después en el concierto de UNICEF en 1979 y en un programa de Olivia en la TV de EEUU. Estas dos fotos recuerdan otros encuentros: arriba en 1981 durante la gira promocional de "PHYSICAL" de Olivia en Suecia y abajo más recientemente en 2016 cuando Frida la visitó en Las Vegas.

At the moment there's a trend to compare old throwback moments with more recent ones in photos. Today we bring two photos that show how good friends Frida and Olivia Netwon-John are since they met in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974. Meeting again at the 1979 UNICEF concert and in Olivia's American TV programme. These two photos remember other meetings: above in 1981 during Olivia's promotional tour of "PHYSICAL" in Sweden and below more recently in 2016 when Frida visited her in Las Vegas.

"CHIQUITITA" SIGUE RECAUDANDO PARA / continues raising funds for UNICEF [Actualización/Update: LALEH'S "CHIQUITITA" & BJÖRN @ NEW YORK, 20-NOV-2014]

Hoy, 20 de Noviembre es una fecha importante, es el 25º aniversario de la Convención de los Derechos del Niño y el 35º aniversario de la Gala "Music for UNICEF" de 1979, en donde participaron Abba, Bee Gees, Olivia Newton-John entre otros. Hoy habrá una gala en Nueva York cuyo programa se cita más abajo en inglés y con un video en el que se verá la retransmisión en vivo.
Y con este motivo, "CHIQUITITA" continuará recaudando fondos para UNICEF. 35 años después de que Abba decidiese ceder todos los royalties de esta canción a UNICEF, Abba The Museum se ha unido a UNICEF Suecia para recaudar fondos adicionales para combatir la descriminación hacia las niñas. En muchas partes del mundo las niñas son descriminadas mucho antes de nacer.

Se puede ayudar escuchando la canción "CHIQUITITA" en YouTube, Spotify o iTunes, en el museo o en pressplaytogive.com. Cada vez que escuches la canción, se dará dinero para proyectos que apoyen los derechos de las niñas. En estos 35 años, la canción ha recaudado 4 millones de dólares.

En los próximos 5 años, también se invitará a artistas contemporáneos a los parcialmente reconstruídos Estudios Polar del museo para regrabar su propia versión de la canción. La primera ha sido Laleh.

Today, November 20th is an important date, the 25th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the 35th anniversary of the Show "Music for Unicef" of 1979, where Abba, Bee Gees, Olivia Newton-John performed among others. Today there'll be another show in New York to celebrate, the programme is announced below with a live broadcast of the event on video.

Due to all this, "CHIQUITITA" will continue raising more funds for UNICEF. 35 years after Abba decided to give all royalties from this song to UNICEF, Abba The Museum has now teamed up with UNICEF Sweden to raise additional funds to combar discrimination against young girls. In many parts of the world young girls are discriminated even before they are born.

You can help by listening the song "CHIQUITITA" on YouTube, Sportify or iTunes, at the museum booths or on pressplaytogive.com. Every time you play the song, money will be given to projects that support the rights of young girls. In these 35 years it has raised 4 million dollars.

Over the next 5 years, contemporary artists will also be invited to the partially reconstructed Polar Studio at the museum to rerecord their own version of the song. The first such artist is Laleh.

Olivia Newton-John dió un concierto en la ciudad de Brighton el pasado jueves 14 de marzo. En la misma ciudad, hace casi 39 años representó al Reino Unido en el Festival de Eurovisión de 1974 con el tema "LONG LIVE LOVE" ("Larga vida al amor"). Este pasado jueves repitió su canción pero también se atrevió con la canción ganadora "WATERLOO" de Abba, con quienes compartió escenario no solo ese día, sino que en varias otras ocasiones: Gala UNICEF 1979 y especiales de TV americana, por ejemplo. Olivia Newton-John performed a concert in the city of Brighton last Thursday March 14th. The same city, where nearly 39 years ago, she represented the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest with the song "LONG LIVE LOVE". Last Thursday she repeated her song but she also had a try with the winning one Abba's "WATERLOO". She has shared the stage with them not only that day, but many others: UNICEF 1976 Show, and American TV specials, for example. Here's her cover version live.

ONE OF A KIND - FIRST GENERATION AUDIO. This is the concert segment IN TRUE STEREO from the 1978 special "Olivia!" Just prior to shooting this segment with a live orchestra, the audio guy asked if I would like a stereo feed of the sound. Of course I said yes and fed two three-quarter inch VCRs with the special feed. Stereo TV was not available widely until the mid-1980s. After completion of the special, I manually synced the 2" master of the show to my ¾" master and, viola, a stereo version of the concert with Andy Gibb, ABBA, and Olivia! Shot just days before it aired, the ABC-TV special "Olivia!" was the marathon of all television specials I edited while in Hollywood. For 36 nonstop hours, director Steve Binder (my all time favorite) and the post-production crew dashed toward an unbelievable deadline and beat it. This is the entire concert segment. The air version begins at 3:01 and ends prior to "Thank you for the Music" (which was used for closing credits). Please select 480p and full screen (and don't forget headphones!); the quality is matchless!

Intentando conseguir un nuevo éxito como "GREASE", Olivia Newton-John hizo "XANADÚ", una película músical y romántica de 1980 dirigida por Robert Greenwald. Es un remake no oficial de la película de 1946 "DOWN TO EARTH" ("Con los pies en la tierra") donde aparecía Rita Hayworth, y también una secuela no oficial a una película de 1944 donde Gene Kelly hacía el mismo papel de propietario del club. El nombre proviene de la provincia china donde Khan estableció su jardín paradisíaco en el poema.

En "XANADÚ" aparecen Olivia, Michael Beck & Gene Kelly y música de Olivia, E.L.O. y Cliff Richards. Ahora 30 años después, Sharleen Spiteri retoma su tema central en su álbum dedicado a canciones del cine.

Trying to achieve a new hit as "GREASE", Olivia Newton-John performed "XANADU", a 1980 musical romance film directed by Robert Greenwald. It's an unofficial remake of the 1946 film "DOWN TO EARTH" starring Rita Hayworth, and also an unofficial sequel of a 1944 film where Gene Kelly played the same role as club owner. The name comes from the Chinese province whre Khan established his paradise graden in the poem.

"XANADU" stars Olivia, Michael Beck & Gene Kelly and music by Olivia, E.L.O. & Cliff Richards. Now 30 years later after, Sharleen Spiteri covers the main song in her album dedicated to movie songs.

We've mentioned Olivia Newton-John in two recent post, and we going to mention her a third time, we've decided to dedicate the section Hits to one of her biggest ones, not counting the film "GREASE". We mean her hit-song "PHYSICAL" included in the album with the same name which became a worldwide nº1 hit in 1981, we enclose the funny video she shot to promote it.

En nuestro último Abba, lugares relacionados, dijimos que las fotos publicadas cumplirán 30 años en unos días. Lo que ofrecemos hoy, cumplió ya 30 años el pasado enero. Se trata de la Gala de Unicef 1979 "A GIFT OF SONG" ("El regalo de una canción"). Un evento organizado por David Frost, Robert Stigwood y los Bee Gees para conmemorar el Año Internacional de la Infancia 1979. Se invitaron a artistas para que donasen canciones cuyos royalties serían cedidos a perpetuidad a beneficio de UNICEF. La gala concierto se celebró el 9 de enero de 1979 en la Sala de la Asemblea General en el edificio de las Naciones Unidas de Nueva York, la primera vez que se celebraba un concierto musical en este lugar. Los artistas reunidos allí fueron: Bee Gees, Abba, John Denver, Olivia Newton-John, Andy Gibb, Earth-Wind-&-Fire, Kris Kristofferson, Rod Stewart y Donna Summer. Elton John iba a actuar pero causó baja unos días antes.

El concierto su abrió con un popurri de temas que acabó con todos los artistas cantando el "HE IS YOUR BROTHER" ("Es tu hermano") de Abba. Y finalizaron la gala con todos cantando "PUT A LITTLE LOVE IN YOUR HEART ("Pon un poco de amor en tu corazón") de Jackie de Shannon. El concierto se filmó y pasó por la NBC americana la noche siguiente como el gran evento musical del año, y en los siguientes meses se transmitió en TVs de todo el mundo. Nunca se ha comercializado en video o DVD.

Como es sabido, Abba cedió los derechos de "CHIQUITITA" que estrenaron en la gala, y se dice que es la canción que más ha recaudado para la causa (más de $2 millones).

On our last Abba, related places, we explained that the photos we published will be 30 years old in a few days. What we offer today has already become 30 years old last January. It's the 1979 Unicef Gala "A GIFT OF SONG". An event organized by David Frost, Robert Stigwood & the Bee Gees to commemorate the United Nations' International Year of the Child in 1979. Artists were invited to donate songs whose royalties would be given away in perpetuity to benefit UNICEF. The concert gala was held on January, 9th, 1979 in the General Assembly Hall in the United Nations building in New York, the first time a popular music concert had been held in the venue. The artists who gathered there were: Bee Gees, Abba, John Denver, Olivia Newton-John, Andy Gibb, Earth-Wind-&-Fire, Kris Kristofferson, Rod Stewart & Donna Summer. Elton John was to perform, but pulled out days before the concert.

The concert opened with a medley of songs which finished with all artists singing along to Abba's "HE IS YOUR BROTHER". They ended the gala with all artists singing Jackie de Shannon's "PUT A LITTLE LOVE IN YOUR HEART". The concert was filmed & shown on American NBC the following night as the TV special of the year and broadcasted on TVs worldwide in the following months. It has never been comercialized on video or DVD, though.

As you know, Abba donated the rights to "CHIQUITITA" ("Litte girl"), which they premièred in the gala,

and it's considered to be the song which has earned the most for the cause (over $2 million).

Abba tuvo éxito masivo en todo el mundo, el país que más se resistió fue los EE.UU. Ellos comentan porque no actuaron mucho por allí, sólo hicieron una gira por esos lugares en el '79. Abba se expandía por el mundo gracias a los videos que emitían por la tele, pero los EE.UU. son muy grandes. En el '78 hicieron una campaña de promoción de cara al disco "THE ALBUM", e hicieron un especial de TV con su amiga Olivia Newton-John. Digo amiga, porque habían coincidido con ella en la Eurovisión'74, Olivia por Gran Bretaña competía con "LONG LIVE LOVE" ("Larga vida al amor"). En el '78, Olivia estaba en pleno bombazo de "GREASE" por lo que un especial con ella podría dar ser una buena forma de darse a conocer allí. Andy Gibb, hermano fallecido de los Bee Gees estaba en el programa también. Incluimos hoy videos de ese especial.

Abba had massive success worlwide, the country which appeared most resistant was the U.S.A. They say because they didn't play mucho round there, they only did a tour there in '79. Abba was famous around the world thanks to the videos broadcasted on TV, but the U.S.A. are too big. In '78, they did a promotional campaign for "THE ALBUM" and appeared on a TV special together with their friend Olivia Newton-John. I say friend, because they had entered together in competition on Eurovision'74, Olivia for Great Britain with "LONG LIVE LOVE". In '78, Olivia had great success with "GREASE", so a TV-special with her could be a good way of becoming known there. Andy Gibb, dead brother of Bee Gees was also in the programme, too. We include videos from this special today.
