CASSETTES: 50º ANIVERSARIO / 50th anniversary

Today the cassette is 50 years old. Our humble tribute to a musical gadget that personalized our way of listening to music. We include an article by europafm.com in Spanish.

British band Keane announced today the release of their new album "STRANGELAND", the fourth, due for the 7th May. we include information and tracklist from contactmusic.com.

Keane have this morning announced details of their new album 'Strangeland' which is set for release on 7th May 2012 through Island Records. The band recorded 'Strangeland' with producer Dan Grech (Radiohead, The Vaccines, Howling Bells, Lana del Rey) in the UK at Sea Fog, Ivor Novello Award winner Tim Rice-Oxley's studio. They are calling it their most personal and honest record yet.
The British multi-million selling band are now a four piece with the addition of new member bass player Jesse Quin who collaborated with Rice-Oxley on Mt. Desolation. Tim Rice-Oxley recently said of the album: "'Strangeland' feels like an adventure that brings with it different things for different people, and like any adventure is full of uncertainty, and the potential for mishap, as well as the possibility of amazing things and glorious discoveries. I love the idea of the journey through 'Strangeland' being a journey of redemption."
'Strangeland' tracklisting:
1. You Are Young
2. Silenced By The Night
3. Disconnected
4. Watch How You Go
5. Sovereign Light Cafe
6. On The Road
7. The Starting Line
8. Black Rain
9. Neon River
10. Day Will Come
11. In Your Own Time
12. Sea Fog
Four years have elapsed since Keane's last album 'Perfect Symmetry'; two since 'Night Train', the mini-LP which followed its three full-length predecessors to the top of the British album charts, securing them a place in pop history. If Keane's feverishly loyal fanbase wondered what the group's next album would sound like, they weren't the only ones.
In the eight years following the release of 2004's 9z platinum Brit award winning 'Hopes & Fears', every Keane album has marked a clear progression from the previous one: the anxious emotional terrain mapped out by 'Under The Iron Sea'; the iridescent poptimism of 'Perfect Symmetry' featuring the electro charged hit song 'Spiralling', voted Q Magazine's 2008 Song Of The Year.
On finishing the recording of the new album in February Keane announced two special shows at the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill, a location close to their hearts as it was both their teenage haunt and near to where the album was recorded. They announced the dates in the local paper only and within 5 minutes they were sold out. This will be the first time fans will hear new material.
"In many respects, it feels like the completion of a circle. On the album you have songs that draw upon the experiences we used to share as kids, growing up in Battle. You can never really go back, of course. Once in a while though, after a good day, we'll go to the local pub and talk about everything and nothing until it's time to go home. Whatever it is that makes us Keane - that invisible glue - is still there. And you can hear it all over 'Strangeland'." (Richard Hughes)

MECANO: ESQUIVANDO EL REGRESO / Avoiding a comeback

"El País" published an article on Mecano about their comeback, o not... We enclose it here completely in Spanish.

Así es como Mecano esquiva su leyenda

[Patricia Godes.

ENTREVISTA A BJÖRN ULVAEUS' interview

Björn Ulvaeus has given an interview to a German radio station Bayern1 a few days ago. We include the complete interview here.

With ABBA, he has written worldwide hits: Bjorn Ulvaeus, the one in the B band name. He is now 65 – and ABBA celebrates its 40th anniversary To celebrate Bavaria has led an interview with the musician. The conversation about German houses, music and a possible return to the stage.
Björn: Hello?
Bayern 1: Hello, here is Bayern 1, we speak with Bjorn?
Björn: Yes you do!
Bayern 1: May we call you Bjorn?
Bjorn: Of course, what did you think? Professor Ulvaeus? (Laughs)
Bayern 1: Well Bjorn, thank you! And also thank you for taking the time for us.
Björn: I thought this is a wonderful idea, this action program, and by the way: I will in a few weeks to come to Munich to celebrate the 70th birthday of an old friend.
Bayern 1: Oh, really? When will you be there?
Bjorn: In a month or so …
Bayern 1: It would be great if you could then visit us.
Bjorn: Yeah, maybe.
Bayern 1: Of interest to us, Björn: You work together with Benny still, write and produce music together. What are you working for now?
Björn: We just put together a musical on stage, on 29 February is premiered in Helsinki.
Bayern 1: Will also go on tour?
Björn: We have already performed the play in Sweden, which was a huge production. Now the whole thing is smaller, so that it can travel well. We would like to do already. Let’s see. We’ll be in for the premiere guests from Germany with us who watch it. We’ll find that it is suitable to all cases for the Scandinavian countries are very good, and for Russia, perhaps even for the Baltic Länder.Warum not for Germany?
Bayern 1: And then, hopefully, with Bayern on the list of tour locations.
Björn: But yes, absolutely!
Bavaria 1: Is there a new song by Benny and Bjorn?
Björn: We occasionally write for Benny’s band, the Benny Andersson Orchestra. The Swedish texts are usually, but some are in English. Apart from that we have in recent years not really done so much together. But who knows what the future holds even more. If we feel the urge again, maybe something for a movie.
Bayern 1: At the moment, of course, delighted the fans on the new ABBA album to come out in April.
Bjorn: So it’s not really new.
Bayern 1: sort of “new” then.
Bjorn: Yeah, exactly!
Bayern 1: Many of us are familiar with even the original 1981 “The Visitors”, but on the new version is an extra song: “From A Twinkling Star To A Passing Angel”.
Björn: It’s a little medley, an example of how a title is created. In fact, from the song “Like An Angel Passing Through My Room” was. That’s on top of the ’81 album. But before that we had different versions and the recording starts with the fact that I make a wrong – demo text -, sing a different version with Frida and gradually to the released song. So no new song, just one example of how we worked.
Bayern 1: Can you give us an impression of how it sounded back then?
Bjorn: That impression is on the record. I sing as “Twinkle, twinkle, little star”.
Bayern 1: When you get a little time that’s private: Do you see your ex-wife Agnetha ?
Bjorn: Yeah! Quite often. We have three grandchildren, so I see them every Christmas, on birthdays. By the way: Next week I see them too, because one has our grandchildren’s birthday.
Bayern 1: So you really have a good relationship?
Bjorn: Yeah!
Bayern 1: You have become good friends over the years?
Bjorn: Yeah, we were lovers, we were more neutral for a while, now we are friends.
Bavaria 1: This is beautiful!
Björn: Yes. (Laughs)
Bayern 1: So you’re still working together with Benny, you have a very good relationship with Agnetha. Excuse me, that we ask this: But everybody wants to know if you someday again appear together as ABBA?
Bjorn: No! That will never happen again!
Bayern 1: We heard you were offered a billion dollars on a tour , but you declined.
Bjorn: Yeah, it’s been a few years ago. I am sure that this money could have done a lot of good, but it would have shortened our lives by ten years! You can not even imagine what that means for stress what is going through since! At the end we said: It’s not really worth it!
Bavaria 1: Life of course, is far more valuable than all the money in the world.
Bjorn: That’s right, I would not allow anyone to take away ten years.
Bayern 1: Of course not. But it would have to be not a whole tour, maybe only one concert, a short, say two or three songs?
Bjorn: The preparations for it were also a great effort. No. The music simply lacks motivation. If we had something new, something that would necessarily would have to hear the world, then we do that too. But we just did not. Nevertheless, we are very proud of our active time in the 70s.

KATIE MELUA @ "SUNDAY TELEGRAPH": ENTREVISTA SINCERA / Sincere interview

Katie gave an interview to the British newspaper "Sunday Telegraph", where she speaks out sincerely and comments on the problems that fame brings at the sight of the broken lives of Amy & Whitney. We include the complete interview here.

[Cole Moreton, "Sunday Telegraph"]
'I look at Amy or Whitney and think, that could have been me'

She was pop’s golden girl before a breakdown forced her to re-evaluate her life. Katie Melua talks about the pressures of fame.
Fame can kill young women like Katie Melua, and she knows it. “There is a loneliness at the centre of it all, a sense of isolation,” says the singer, who became famous at the age of 19. “You can’t cope, but you can’t say so because the life is what you always wanted.”
Katie became a national sweetheart and sold millions of records as the girl with the big eyes and ringlets who sang jazzy ballads such as Nine Million Bicycles and The Closest Thing to Crazy in a warm, husky voice. Then came a sudden personal crisis two years ago, that led to Melua being briefly hospitalised. “I had a breakdown and I had to drop out for a while.”
Now she is about to release a comeback album called Secret Symphony and looks healthy and happy at her flat in west London. But Melua knows the stakes are high. Last week, the father of the late Amy Winehouse picked up a posthumous Grammy for his daughter, who was once at the same performing arts school as Melua. “She was a troubled soul.”
And on the other side of the Atlantic, as we speak, the family of Whitney Houston is in mourning. “It’s really sad. Whitney had a magnificent voice. I keep hearing people say they’re not surprised by her death, and I’m not either. When you consider the pressure she was under, and add in the drugs, something terrible is going to happen.”
If anyone understands those pressures it is Melua, who became a star in 2003 at the same young age as Houston had. Within three years, she was Britain’s biggest-selling female artist. It was a surprise when she broke from Mike Batt, the producer who had discovered her, and recorded in 2010 with Madonna’s producer William Orbit. The sales were not as great, but it was a dramatic, startling record that the critics loved. The first sign of trouble was when her record company cancelled a tour, saying: “Katie Melua is suffering from exhaustion and has been ordered by her doctors not to work for a few months.”
She hasn’t talked about this publicly before, apart from saying a year ago: “I’ve had a bit of a breakdown and been very unwell… the fact is, I just couldn’t go on any longer. I knew there was something seriously wrong because I was just sitting in a chair staring into space.”
Why did she even say that? “I was drunk at a party. I got approached by a journalist. She kind of put the words in my mouth. She said: 'I hear you had a breakdown.’ And I went: 'A bit of’. Then that got written about.”
Is it not true? “Well no, it is true. That is what happened. I never spoke about the symptoms, because it’s between you and your doctor.”
Melua does call it “the breakdown” and says she did not work for six months, but what was the trigger? “The amount of travelling I was doing was a pressure I put on myself. I had just made my first album without Mike and I wanted it to do very well, so I pushed myself. I had a tour coming up but I still went to America and hopped around the world doing promotion. That was crazy. Then, when it’s not working, you can’t go: 'No, it’s too knackering.’ You’ve got the dream job and people expect things of you.”
Stressed out and exhausted, she felt responsible for a lot of people’s livelihoods, unable to switch off and, crucially, unable to admit she was in trouble. “All those bits of tension mount up. Then there’s the thing about how you should be happy because you are doing the thing you love. It seems bizarre to people that you’re not constantly happy.”
It would be easy to listen to this young, beautiful, talented and wealthy woman talk about the pressures of fame and think: “Try being out of work or raising a family on a wage that doesn’t cover the bills.” And to be fair, she would agree. Melua was born in the former Soviet republic of Georgia, where bread meant long queues and water had to be carried in a bucket up four flights of stairs to the family flat. Many of her relatives are still there, but Melua came to Britain at the age of eight when her father, a heart surgeon, got a job in Belfast.
“We had ideas about what moving to the West would be like from Hollywood films, in which all the houses had little white, picket fences. When we saw the houses it was a bit of a shock. We were staying in accommodation for the hospital workers and it was like a Soviet block.”
As a child, she was only aware of the Troubles “as part of the atmosphere. But life was better for us. I was able to have a hot bath. The electricity stayed on. The school didn’t shut down in winter. Those things made it magical.”
The family moved to Surrey before Melua won a place at the Brit School of the performing arts in Croydon. She was there when Batt – best known for creating The Wombles – came looking for a young woman who could perform like the late Eva Cassidy. He created a relaxed musical style for her that appealed to the huge Radio 2 audience.
“I remember the phone call when the album got to the top of the charts. You expect balloons and fireworks, but I was just in the kitchen in Redhill with my mum. She was like, 'Yay.’ Then we continued to have breakfast.”
Her first three albums were a huge success for Batt’s label, Dramatico, but she was now at the centre of a Katie Melua industry. “That sounds horrific. You try not to think about it while creating the music. You can’t think of yourself as a money machine.”
Other people did think that way, particularly when she went back to Georgia. “I try to help, but the best thing is to say you don’t have as much money as people think you do. That is true.” The figure I’ve read is £12 million. “I know. The papers exaggerate it.” How much is she worth? More than a million? “Yeah, but I’m not telling you.”
She’s a smart woman, as the mathematician Simon Singh found out when he questioned the accuracy of her song, Nine Million Bicycles. Singh disputed the claim that we are: “12 billion miles from the edge. That’s a guess.” She popped up on Radio 4 with a new verse, incorporating his numbers: “We are 13.7 billion light years from the edge of the observable universe. That’s a good estimate, with well-defined error bars… ”
She can laugh at herself, then. So it is surprising that one early pressure came from believing the hype about herself. “Can it be resisted? To tell the truth, it feels good. That’s why stars have egos: because we start to believe it. The praise is magnified – but if anything happens like a bad review, then that is magnified too, and it is a big blow.”
Melua began to feel vulnerable on stage. “You’re not risking your life but sometimes it feels like you are, when you walk on and there are thousands of people staring at you. Fear kicks in.”
While all this was going on in her head, Melua was being seen as the yin to the yang of the feisty Winehouse, who was once astonishingly rude about her on TV. Asked if they could work together, she snarled: “I’d rather have cat Aids.”
The audience laughter showed how much Melua’s wholesome image had become divorced from any sense of her as a real person.
“She was mean about me, very mean,” says Melua, quietly. “I was shocked when she died because she was so young, but I wasn’t completely surprised. Maybe the person ends up believing the story that is being told about them.”
The question that all outsiders ask is, why do stars with so many blessings end up taking drugs as well? “I am only guessing, because I don’t do that, but I think maybe they’re trying to get some kind of feeling back. There is a numbness that takes over. You start to get insecure about why people are with you.”
Does she look at Winehouse and Houston and think it could have been her? “About the drugs, I do think that. I thank God for the people I am surrounded by and how close I am to my family. I’m sure they were both talented people and it could happen to anyone. Who knows – touch wood – where my life is going to take me.”
Up the aisle, is one answer. In September, she will marry World Superbike champion James Toseland. Melua used to distract herself with dangerous sports such as skydiving – and performed the world’s deepest underwater concert in an oil rig 303 metres under the sea – but ironically, loving a danger man seems to have calmed her down.
“My fiancé used to ride motorcycles at 250mph. That’s a pressurised job. He finds it amazing that I get as focused about my work.” Does he say: “Come on love, it’s only singing?” She laughs. “He’s not condescending, but he does say something like that. It’s so refreshing to hear.”
On the new record, Melua returns to the sound that made her famous. Mike Batt wrote many of the songs, with contributions from Fran Healy and Ron Sexsmith. The one song she wrote is called Forgetting All My Troubles.
“I wanted to make quite an effortless record,” she says. “The last album was quite a challenge and there was a lot of soul-searching. This time, I just wanted to sing.”
She will tour in October but then rest. “I will take a few months off. Maybe make a family, although nothing is planned. I’m going to do things differently from now on.”

"THE VISITORS" DELUXE EDITION: ACTUALIZACIÓN / Update

Polar Music has given more details about the forthcoming release of "THE VISITORS" Deluxe Edition, which we've already talked about here. The complete information below.

Polar have released a few more details about the Extra Bonus Track, ‘From A Twinkling Star To A Passing Angel’ . It traces the evolution of ‘Like An Angel Passing Through My Room’, the closing track on The Visitors. Back in 1981, this particular song was one of the more challenging tunes during original recording sessions for the album. With the first demos and backing tracks being laid down in May 1981, it wasn’t until several different versions later, in November 1981 – only three weeks before the album reached record shops! – that ABBA finally landed on the version heard on the album.

As the Deluxe Edition of The Visitors was put together, ABBA’s Benny Andersson had the idea that it would be interesting to revisit the various recordings of the song and put together a medley. And this he did in October and November of 2011. The nine-minute medley takes us from the very first demo, with vocals by Björn, to a run-through with Benny on electric piano and Frida on lead vocals, similar to the final version. In between are a demo recording by Frida and Benny (on grand piano) with alternate lyrics entitled ‘Another Morning Without You’; a completely different “disco” attempt, played by a full band and with the final lyrics in place; and a ballad interpretation, also with a full band backing, featuring Frida on lead vocals. “It was fun to put this thing together, just to show what the process can be like,” says Benny Andersson. “It’s an interesting observation on how you labour over things before you reach the final result.”

Elsewhere on The Visitors Deluxe Edition, the original album has been expanded with bonus tracks to include ‘Should I Laugh Or Cry’, recorded during sessions for The Visitors but only used as the B-side of the ‘One Of Us’ single. The Deluxe Edition features a version with a brief count-in, which was originally released on the ‘One Of Us’ single in Great Britain and South Africa. The remaining bonus tracks cover ABBA’s final singles and recording sessions in 1982.

The DVD of this Deluxe Edition opens with two performances from the television special Dick Cavett Meets ABBA, where ABBA previewed two tracks from their forthcoming album: ‘Two For The Price Of One’ and ‘Slipping Through My Fingers’. Another selection from the original broadcast of the TV special is the video for ‘When All Is Said And Done’, which featured an edit that differs slightly from the version heard on the album – this video is included here with its rare original soundtrack in stereo.

Also featured are two lengthy television appearances, which ABBA made as they were promoting their 1982 singles ‘The Day Before You Came’ and ‘Under Attack’, along with the compilation album The Singles – The First Ten Years. The first comes from Great Britain and the second from Sweden, wherein the group also performed ‘Under Attack’. Rounding off the DVD are four vintage commercials for The Visitors and The Singles – The First Ten Years, and a gallery of selected sleeves from the 1981–1982 era.

"THE DAY BEFORE YOU CAME", INTERPRETACIONES / Interpretations

British webpage NME has placed "THE DAY BEFORE YOU CAME", Abba's last recorded song, as the sixth best song in pop history. There are interesting interpretations about the song in the article which we include here.

The final song ever recorded by ABBA was arguably also their finest.

Many years after it was laid down in the studio, sound engineer Michael B Tretow recalled the session. He remembered Agnetha Faltskog recording her lone vocal track with the lights dimmed. On completing the final verse, she is said to have taken her headphones off before leaving the studio (and the band) quietly through the back door. This tantalizing image of things left unsaid, under a brooding shimmer fits perfectly with the song’s bald, bleak beauty.
It’s an interesting track in part because ‘The Day Before You Came’ totally breaks with the popular impression of the band as all showbiz smiles, massive harmonies, gaudy outfits and Scandi wife-swapping. ‘The Day Before You Came’ stands in totally opposition to a career that seemed to live off the maxim “more is better”.

Musically the track scuttles along like a slow heartbreak, sparsely painting its picture with the sole palette of a synth and Agnetha’s lone vocal. This is deceptive however, as there are layers of sonics beneath the smooth surface, suggesting so much going on under the skin.
On the surface the lyrics seem to reflect the timeline of a woman who is reminiscing on her mundane routine before she met her world changing lover. But a deeper probe suggests something a bit darker at the core. There was the working title of the song (‘The Suffering Bird’) , hinting at a prison like fragility. There’s the disorientating ambiguity of Agnetha’s words (“I’m certain…”, “I must have…”,”I’m sure,”) which suggest a zombie sleep walking through their life (“It’s funny, but I had no sense of living without aim/ The day before you came") and hints at depression ("I need a lot of sleep"). There’s also the reference to her bedtime reading matter (“The latest one by Marilyn French or something in that style,”). Marilyn French was a radical feminist author who was infamously misquoted as saying: “all men are rapists.”

The most intriguing theory is that the protagonist is a ghost, who is eerily detailing the minutiae of her daily life before her murderer –the “you” of the title- ended her life. It might sound far-fetched but Frida and Benny’s celestial harmonies of the verse and the harmony (or is it shrieking?) of the middle eight certainly add kudos to this theory. It makes the ambiguity final line ("And rattling on the roof I must have heard the sound of rain / The day before you came") a bit more chilling.
In a 2010 interview with The Times, Bjorn Ulvaeus was asked what happened after the man "came". He said:
"You've spotted it, haven't you? The music is hinting at it. You can tell in that song that we were straining towards musical theatre. We got Agnetha to act the part of the person in that song. In retrospect, it might have been too much of a change for a lot of Abba fans. The energy had gone."

It’s shame he took this view because their mastery of this Cold Wave keyboard sound suggests they could have seamlessly made the transition into the next decade, building on what they began with 'The Day Before You Came'. As it is, the song is the ultimate tease, a door left ajar, a murder mystery with its final page torn out. Which arguably makes it all the more wonderful.

MADONNA @ SUPER BOWL FINAL 2012

BENNY & BJÖRN @ FINLAND ["From a twinkling star to a passing angel"]

ACTUALIZADO / UPDATED [8-2-2012]

THE VISITORS", "FROM A TWINKLING STAR TO A PASSING ANGEL". A la pregunta contestó Benny: "Es sólo un demo de "LIKE AN NAGEL PASSING THROUGH MY ROOM".

Benny & Björn are in Finland these day before the premiere of their musical production "KRISTINA FRAN DUVEMALA" at the neighbouring country's capital. They have given interviews to the Finnish media and though the questions have referred widely to the music, there have also been questions about "FROM A TWINKLING STAR TO A PASSING ANGEL", the “previously unreleased” ABBA track on the forthcoming "THE VISITORS" Deluxe Edition CD. To this questions, Benny answered: “Just a demo of "LIKE AN ANGEL PASSING THROUGH MY ROOM". It is a good illustration of the process, by which the song came about.” Apart from this he assured that there aren't anymore unedited songs hidden in the archives. They are surprised that Abba's music has remained popular for so long and admit that the Abba members don't have much to do with each other nowadays and that they will never come back.

ROXETTE, "TRAVELLING" [+ Borgholm Castle 1989 Extended Video]

It seems that the second part of Roxette's "TOURISM" won't be either "2rism" or "T2" but "TRAVELLING". The album recorded in studios, stages, hotel rooms and other strange places during their 2011 world tour, will be out in March, according to what Per announced today on Facebook, together with the album's sleeve, which you can see. We also report that Roxette received the award given by the Swedish government to the best music export of 2011 for the world tour (In the photo). And to illustrate this post, we've found an extended video of their live performance at Borgholm castle in 1989.

OFFICIAL STATEMENT:
This year’s music export award-winnig duo celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2011 with one of the biggest tours a Swedish band has ever done. The world tour that began in Russia in February 2011 – and that will extend well into this year – exceeded the forecast for number of tickets sold to over one million. The group has since its start sold over 50 million albums and another 20 million singles, and created some of music history’s greatest hits: It Must Have Been Love, Joyride, The Look, Listen to Your Heart and Dressed for success – just to name a few. After ABBA – Roxette’s the most successful band of all time on the international music scene.
