Abba fueron muy grandes en su día en el continente austral. Cuando Australia descubrió al grupo sueco, supusieron un gran hito sólo comparable al furor que habían desatado los Beatles en Europa una década antes. Por eso las fotos que hoy publicamos tienen su interés: dos famosas australianas (Nicole Kidman y Kylie Minogue) encantadas de poder fotografiarse, e incluso cantar, con sus ídolos Björn y Benny.
Abba were huge in their hayday down under. When Australia discovered the Swedish group, they became a grand hit only comparable to the craze that the Beatles had broken throughout Europe one decade before. Merece ser candidata.

Después de los Cranberries, el Palacio de Vistalegre de Madrid recibió el pasado lunes a los británicos Spandau Ballet en su concierto de regreso, como el viernes hicieran en Barcelona. Incluimos fotos y algún video de temas en directo del concierto y una crítica de El País.
After the Cranberries, the Vistalegre Palace of Madrid received last Monday the British band Spandau Ballet in their comeback concert, as they had already done in Barcelona on Friday. Crítica/Critical review:
Desde el comienzo del concierto, Spandau Ballet, con la exitosa To cut a long story short abriéndolo tras un vídeo en el que aparecían los protagonistas de la noche 20 años atrás, quedó marcado el juego. Apelar a los recuerdos, rememorar aquellos años de hombreras constituía el guión, pero se trataba de escribirlo aceptando que el tiempo no ha pasado en vano. Aquellos eran años en los que la elegancia de Spandau Ballet pasaba por la extravagancia de unos vestuarios que ahora sonrojan, de manera que nada mejor que la pulcritud para vestir de gala. Esa pulcritud fue la que impulsó las versiones de sus temas más populares empujados por la voz de un Tony Hadley que parecía no haber perdido potencia.
Con la fiabilidad de un prestidigitador, el quinteto británico hizo aparecer temas como Only when you leave, I'll fly for you o She loved like diamond antes de que la actuación estuviese mediada. Para entonces, frases como "mi padre me prohibió ir a verlos a la Monumental en el 87" eran pronunciadas por una señora ataviada de forma que arrojaba luz sobre la paternal prohibición de antaño. Los recuerdos. Mientras tanto, el concierto tomaba cuerpo y sonaba Once more, la composición más reciente de la noche, un baladón para fundir señoras. Tras ella Round and round volvía a mostrar en pantalla a unos Spandau mozalbetes. Pero lo mejor estaba por llegar, un Through the barricades para seguir caldeando recuerdos, la vital Lifeline o piezas como True o Gold, vestigios de una época en que lo único de verdad móvil era el Renault 5 Copa Turbo. La historia de la música pop no los recordará más allá de una anécdota estacional, pero quienes la vivieron no tuvieron motivos para salir decepcionados del concierto de aquellos que tantas habitaciones decoraron desde un póster.

Frida y Benny recibieron de manos de Barry y Robin Gibb, y en nombre de todo el grupo, la distinción que incluye a Abba en el Rock'n'roll Hall of Fame anoche en una ceremonia celebrada en el Waldorf Astoria de Nueva York. Benny, dijo: "Estas canciones nos han traido todo el camino hasta este Rock'n'roll Hall of Fame, y hablo en nombre de todos, estamos profundamente honrados". Frida & Benny received from Barry & Robin Gibb, on behalf of the whole group, the award that inducts Abba into the Rock'n'roll Hall of Fame last night at a gala held at the Waldorf Astoria, New York. We include photos and a video with some short comments by both. Benny said: "These songs have brought us all the way into the great Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and I speak for all of us ... we are deeply, deeply honored." Frida, commented: "My grandson in the audience, is a heavy metal musician but he still appreciates grandma's music. "It's too late now, ABBA will never perform together again". And as grand finale Benny played the piano while Faith Hill sang "THE WINNER TAKES IT ALL".

Benny Andersson ha concedido una entrevista al Billboard Magazine con motivo de la entrada de ABBA en el Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. En él se confirma que el próximo 15 de marzo Frida y él asistirán a la ceremonia de Nueva York por la que son aceptados. Incluimos entrevista en inglés. Benny Andersson has given the Billboard Magazine an interview due to Abba's induction in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. He confirms that Frida and himself will be attending the induction ceremony on March 15th in New York. We enclose the interview. At the bottom we include a link to another radio interview with him.
Rock 'n' roll may not be the term most commonly associated with ABBA's music, but the group's Benny Andersson thinks it's appropriate for the Swedish group, which broke up in 1983, to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame next week."I take it as a true honor," Andersson tells Billboard.com. "We are and were sort of a solid pop band, and there is a difference between pop music and rock 'n' roll music. Being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame wasn't on the map, really, for us. On the other hand, there are a lot of pop acts already inducted, so I don't mind. I'm not the one who inducted myself, you know?"Andersson will be attending the March 15 induction ceremony at New York's Waldorf Astoria Hotel with ex-wife Frida (Anni-Frid Lyngstad), while Agnetha Faltskog, who doesn't fly, and songwriting partner Bjorn Ulvaeus will skip the event. Faith Hill is slated to sing ABBA songs in tribute to the group, but Andersson says he'd be up to perform at the ceremony as well. "If someone asks me to, yeah, I will," he notes. "I'll see if I can play something from the old catalog."Andersson is also spreading some new catalog these days. "Story of a Heart," which he released earlier this month, is the first U.S. release from the Benny Andersson Band, a 16-piece group that's been active in Sweden -- where it's known as Benny Anderssons Orkester -- for the past 20 years. "Story of the Heart" compiles songs from the troupe's previous releases, though the title track is a fresh composition by Andersson and Ulvaeus that's very much in the ABBA mode."In the old days with ABBA we were sitting together, banging along on guitar and piano, but it hasn't been like that since (the 1984 musical) 'Chess,' " says Andersson, who remains in Sweden while Ulvaeus has lived in England since the early '80s. "I write the music nowadays and send it to him, and if he feel's there's a lyric to it, he'll write that. He's done all those lyrics on ('Story of a Heart'); he did it in Swedish in the original versions, then he translated the songs into English."Andersson plans on recording a new group album later this year. Meanwhile he and Ulvaeus are bringing out the first English language recording of "Kristina," a musical based on "The Emigrants" novels by Swedish author Vilhelm Moberg. After a successful run in Sweden between 1995-99, the duo translated it into English for a performance last September at Carnegie Hall in New York, which was recorded for an album that's being released on April 12 in Europe -- just before it's performed again on April 14 at London's Royal Albert Hall. The album will also come out in the U.S., though no release date has been set, but Andersson is not sure if the English version of "Kristina" will go into full stage production."I have no idea of the sort of commercial value of it," Andersson acknowledges. "It's a serious piece; it's very far away from 'Mamma Mia,' for example. It just felt good to present this to an American audience and now to an English audience, and then we'll see. It might end up in a theater, the full production, but it's a bit premature to say anything about that."
