Abba’s famous blonde Agnetha Faltskog takes a chance on pop comeback

ONE of pop’s greatest voices has emerged from her self-imposed exile to the delight of millions of fans worldwide.By: Elisa RochAbba's Agnetha Faltskog is making a comeback

In what is potentially one of the greatest musical returns of all time, Abba’s golden girl Agnetha Faltskog has teamed up with Take That’s Gary Barlow for a duet.
Agnetha, now 62, also collaborated with Britney Spears’s Swedish songwriting team for her first album in nine years.
Agnetha’s single When You Really Loved Someone is out now. Her album, A, follows later this year and the star hopes the album will lay to rest the image the public has of her.
She said: “I’m very earth-grounded and very normal, I just like to stay at home.
“I have been described as a very mysterious human being and that hurts a little bit, because it’s not like that at all,” she adds.
The new musical project began two years ago, when Swedish producer Jorgen Elofsson rang her doorbell hoping to play Agnetha three songs he had written for her.
The hit composer, who penned Britney Spears’s Crazy and Kelly Clarkson’s Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You), said his dream was to coax Agnetha back into the studio.
She said: “It was flattering. It really was. I just couldn’t say no. I really loved the songs from the beginning.”

But before Agnetha would enter the studio she had some conditions.
“I told him, ‘we have to talk about a lot of things first,’” she recalled. “It was nine or 10 years since I’d sung, so I didn’t know if [my voice] worked.”
“I said from the very beginning, ‘if it sounds old I don’t want to do this, because...why should I?’”
The star is aware that her past relationship with a Dutch fan who was 16 years her junior has not helped with her reputation.
The man, who turned dangerous when she broke off the affair, only added to the perception that she was a lonely and unhappy person, none of which is true, she insists.
But the singer said she cannot go into details of what happened “for legal reasons”.
Since Abba split in 1982, she has been the band’s most elusive member. She largely shuns the limelight, living quietly on the secluded island of Ekero, west of Stockholm.
Agnetha says she had totally fallen out of the practice of singing and songwriting since her Abba days. Her duet with Barlow is called I Should Have Followed You Home. Sadly, the pair recorded the song in different countries and recording studios and have not yet met.
Agnetha has described the single as “very mature and worthy”.
She says she’s looking forward to coming back to the UK and speaks fondly of Abba’s seven-day residency in London’s Wembley Arena in 1979.
“People’s reaction was fantastic on Dancing Queen,” she said. “And, otherwise, it was very nice with Thank You For The Music.”
She enjoys the memories of Abba and has donated costumes and memorabilia to the Abba Museum which will open in Sweden in May, saying, “It is very strange to have a museum in your honour”, but cannot see the band reforming.
She added: “It was such a long time ago and we are getting older and we have our different lives.”

But for now, she is concentrating on the new record – one she thought she might never make, and one which could be her last. “I think to look in the future, to plan another one, it’s not realistic right now. But I don’t close any doors. I’m very open for what comes up.
“At the moment, we are so happy with this one. I really hope people will like it as much as we do.”
As for the other members of Abba, Anni-Frid Lyngstad is now 67 and lives in Switzerland as the Countess of Plauen following her marriage to Prince Heinrich Ruzzo Reuss of Plauen.
She makes public appearances occasionally but is mostly involved in charity work, sometimes with her friend, the Queen of Sweden.
Benny Andersson, 66, is still working with Bjorn Ulveaus, 67, on new projects and is writing lyrics for other artists. He also has his own band called Benny Andersson Orkester and owns the stylish Rival hotel in Stockholm.
Bjorn, meanwhile, has become a media mogul who owns several lucrative stage and music companies. Together with Benny, the pair are said to have made millions by agreeing to collaborate with Hollywood producers on the film musical version of stage show Mamma Mia in 2008.
As a band, Abba have sold more than 380 million albums around the world and they are still one of the most popular bands to download of all time on music sites like Apple’s iTunes and Spotify.

Abba's Agnetha comes out of retirement

One of pop's most enigmatic voices has emerged with her first album in nine years. Agnetha Faltskog's new album sees her duet with Gary Barlow and collaborate with Britney Spears' Swedish songwriting team. Just don't call her "mysterious".
Forty-five years ago, before Abba were even a twinkle in Eurovision's eye, Agnetha Faltskog made her very first TV appearance.
Aged just 17, she performed Jag Var Sa Kar (I Was So In Love), a syrupy self-penned waltz, on Swedish TV show Studio 8.
The melancholy lyrics, inspired by her idol Connie Francis, were a stark contrast to the exuberant blonde singer, who "took the radio in my arms and danced around" when she first heard her single on the air.
Little did she know, misery would become her musical forte, especially when she teamed up with Benny, Bjorn and Anni-Frida to form Abba.

Start Quote

I'm very earth-grounded and very normal, I just like to stay at home”
Agnetha Faltskog
The songs on which Faltskog took lead vocals - Hasta Manana, The Name Of The Game, Chiquitita - were the band's biggest tear-jerkers.
On The Winner Takes It All, recorded as her marriage to Bjorn Ulvaeus fell apart, the emotion is almost too much to bear.
Faltskog is by turns defiant and broken. "I was in your arms, thinking I belonged there," she cries, as her husband merely shakes her hand and turns away.
Oddly, the singer calls it "her biggest favourite" from the band's back catalogue. "It's a shame we never got to play it live," she adds.
Since the band went their separate ways in 1982, the girl with golden hair has been the band's most elusive member. She largely shuns the limelight, living quietly on the secluded island of Ekero, west of Stockholm.
Perhaps because of those world-weary lyrics, she was portrayed as a frail recluse - the Greta Garbo of pop.
The revelation in 2000 that she had entered a relationship with an obsessed Dutch fan, 16 years her junior, who turned dangerous when she broke off the affair, only added to the perception that she was lonely and unhappy.
Nervous return
Today, she cannot talk about the relationship for legal reasons, but Faltskog says the media have the wrong impression of her private life.
"I have been described as a very mysterious human being and that hurts a little bit, because it's not like that at all," she says.

Agnetha Faltskog says she had totally fallen out of the practice of singing since her Abba days
On the phone from Stockholm, she is neither awkward nor reticent, although she chooses her words carefully, sometimes with the aid of an interpreter.
Laughter peppers the conversation, and she denies any suggestion she's a hermit.
"I'm very earth-grounded and very normal," she says. "I just like to stay at home."
Fate came to her house 18 months ago, when Swedish producer Jorgen Elofsson rang the doorbell, hoping to to play Faltskog three songs he had written for her.
An internationally successful composer, his credits include Britney Spears' Crazy and Kelly Clarkson's Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You). His dream was to coax Faltskog out of a nine-year hiatus and back into the studio.
"It was flattering," says the singer. "It really was."
"I just couldn't say 'no'. I really loved the songs from the beginning."
But before Faltskog would enter the studio, she had some conditions.
"I told him, 'we have to talk about a lot of things first,'" she recalls. "It was nine or 10 years since I'd sung, so I didn't know if [my voice] worked."
"I said from the beginning, 'if it sounds old I don't want to do this, because... Why should I?'"
Tasteful and sumptuous
Listening to the album, simply titled 'A', it is clear that Faltskog's vocal cords are in fine shape.
Abba's Agnetha
Agnetha Faltskog has collaborated with Gary Barlow but they have never met
Elofsson, for his part, has ditched the upfront production of his teen pop hits for a sound Faltskog calls "very mature and worthy".
"When you love someone, and you've lost that one, then nothing really matters," sighs Faltskog on the first single, When You Really Loved Someone.
On the closing track, the singer scatters photos of an old lover across her bedroom floor and wonders what happened to their relationship.
Ripe with bittersweet emotion, the song is her sole contribution as a composer. You wonder why she didn't write more.
Faltskog says she simply fell out of practice.
"During the Abba years the boys were writing nearly all the material and I didn't have any time. They asked me a lot - but when we were at home, I just wanted to be with my children.
"For this album, we had an idea that maybe I should try to write one song. I didn't want to do more. I'm not that composer that composes every day. But it was very exciting to see if it still worked - and it did!"
The album doesn't reinvent the pop wheel, but is tasteful and sumptuous, rarely raising its tempo above "mid".
One exception is Dance Your Pain Away, where disco strings stab at a gymnastic bassline, apparently summoned from the dusty off-cuts of Abba's Voulez Vous.
Another stand-out is I Should Have Followed You Home, where Faltskog trades lines with Gary Barlow.
"We haven't even met," Faltskog reveals. "I spoke to him once on the phone - but I was on holiday when he did his singing."
She hopes to meet Barlow on a forthcoming promotional trip to the UK, but says there are currently "no plans" for them to perform the song together live.
Tornado trauma
Faltskog's trip to the UK may come as a surprise to some seasoned Abba-watchers. During the band's heyday, she had a rule that she would never leave home for more than two weeks at a time, so she wouldn't be separated from her children (both born in the midst of Abbamania).
A nervous flyer, she arranged to travel separately from Ulvaeus for the sake of the children, in case anything should happen to either of them in mid-air.
Agnetha Faltskog
Agnetha Faltskog says an Abba reunion is unlikely ever to happen
Then, towards the end of Abba's 1979 US tour, the band had a quick turnaround between gigs in New York and Boston.
Faltskog boarded a chartered jet, which previously belonged to millionaire aviator Howard Hughes, and flew straight into the middle of a tornado which forced Boston's airfield to close.
Running out of fuel, in a pitch black sky, the pilot performed an emergency landing in Manchester, New Hampshire. The first attempt was aborted at the last minute, pulling up just before the wheels hit the runway. Fortunately, the plane touched down on the second try.
Since then, she has largely avoided flying - even coming to the UK "by bus once" for a promotional trip.
"But nowadays I have started to fly again," she says. "I have gone to a man - a therapist - who taught me to think in another way, a very positive way. It works. It helps, at least."
The 62-year-old says she's looking forward to coming back to the UK, and speaks fondly of Abba's seven-day residency in London's Wembley Arena in 1979.
"People's reaction was fantastic on Dancing Queen," she says. "And otherwise, it was very nice with Thank You For The Music."
She enjoys the memories of Abba, and has donated costumes and memorabilia to the Abba Museum which will open in Sweden in May ("it is very strange to have a museum in your honour!"), but cannot see the band reforming.
"It was such a long time ago, and we are getting older, and we have our different lives," she says.
For now, she is concentrating on the new record - one she thought she might never make, and one which could be her last.
"I think to look in the future, to plan another one, it's not realistic right now. But I don't close any doors. I'm very open for what comes up. At the moment, we are so happy with this one. I really hope people will like it as much as we do."
Agnetha's single When You Really Loved Someone is out now. Her album, A, follows later this year.

[Abba Intermezzo 11-03-2013]

In Germany, Agnetha's first single off her new album will be "The One Who Loves You Now", released today, March 11, 2013. It will be downloadable from iTunes as well as other digital outlets in Germany, and radio airplay will begin as well. Other countries will see "When You Really Loved Someone" as their single release today.

The album, titled "A", will be released on May 10, 2013. It will contain 10 songs.
"I Should've Followed You Home" is a duet with Gary Barlow of Take That,
"I Keep Them On The Floor Beside My Bed" has been co-written by Agnetha herself at home in the countryside.
The thoughtful-sounding "Bubble" aptly expresses Agnetha's attitude towards glamour and the limelight,
"Dance Your Pain Away" is a rousing disco number,
"Back On Your Radio" is crystal clear pop.
"Past Forever" is a piano-based track with its chorus containing something kind of like Agnetha's life motto: "What can't be broken: the kind of love that lasts."

Agnetha spoke about her new album at Stockholm's Grand Hotel. In the accompanying press release, she talks about how she felt when she went into the studio for the first time together with producers Jörgen Elofsson and Peter Nordahl: "The album as such didn't worry me, but my voice really did. I had not sung for such a long time, so I must have thought: What should I do if it's suddenly gone?"
"It was a good friend of mine who got all this going", explains Agnetha. "She called me and told me that Jörgen Elofsson and Peter Nordahl wanted to play a few of their compositions for me. So they came by and played three songs for me, and I just thought: 'For heaven's sake, I just have to join in'. It felt exactly like the right kind of challenge. I asked my daughter: 'What do you think? Should I do it?' and she answered: 'You should think about this thoroughly. Everything could start all over again.' The recording sessions were wonderful, but you have to face that these recordings may have consequences afterwards."

"WHEN YOU REALLY LOVED SOMEONE"
Soul searching
Heartbroken
Eyes open
Some say
You’re only crying in the dark

Life changes, rearranges
Time passes
Some say
You’re only crying in the dark

He promised you his love would last forever
The day he said goodbye
All you wanted
Was to lay down and die

When you loved someone
Really loved someone
And you lost that one
Well, then nothing really matters
No forgiveness, no politeness
No one else to take his place
No one, no one
Oh-ooh

Come together, honey
Let him go now, honey
Save your heart
They say
No more crying in the dark

Gotta break loose, have some fun
Let yourself go
Come undone
I know your friends mean well, but
Ooh

When you loved someone
Really loved someone
And you lost that one
Well, then nothing really matters
No forgiveness, no politeness
No one else to take his place
No one, no one
When you really loved someone

Loved someone
You’ll never be the same

Hmm…
When you loved someone
Really loved someone
And you lost that one
Well, then nothing really matters
No forgiveness, no politeness
No one else to take his place
No one, no one
No one
When you really loved someone

Sharleen Spiteri says music business is still a man's world as she prepares to launch first Texas album in eight years

GLASGOW singer prepares to hit the road with her reunited band and tells how her love of what she does helps her stay grounded in a 'completely sexist' industry.

SHARLEEN Spiteri will be keeping her clothes on for the launch of the first Texas album in eight years – despite the music business being as sexist as ever.
Texas release The Conversation in May. It features Suede’s Bernard Butler, Primal Scream’s Barrie Cadogan and Mercury-nominated rocker Richard Hawley.
The album marks the band’s 25th anniversary and Sharleen insists there is still too much pressure being put on women to strip off to sell records.
The 45-year-old said: “The music industry is still a man’s world.
“Women sell massive amounts of records, but the business is still ruled by men.
“It is completely sexist. If you get into it, you have to be tough as nails to survive.
“You have to be upfront and stick to your guns a million times harder than everyone else will. The decision-makers behind the budgets are all men.
“Those budgets are based on whether the woman is skinny, what she looks like and whether she is going to show t*** and a***.
“Some people do the whole booty thing and are scantily clad. It is what they want to do. As long as that is who they are and want to be, that’s OK. But many are guided down that route instead of what they really want to be.
“Women are pushed into those areas to get them on the cover of men’s magazines. They are made to show a bit of skin.”
Sharleen claims that in refusing to get her kit off, she is merely following in a long line of credible Scottish female singers.
She said: “I have never done it. I love looking sexy, but it depends on your perception of sexy.
“Guys do cover shoots as well and want to look hot. It can be done in different ways.
“I always think what is sexy is what you don’t see.
“That’s how my mind works, which is probably why I’ve managed to stick to my guns.”
Sharleen added: “Scots are pretty good at not showing flesh – singers like Annie Lennox, going all the way back to Lulu.
“It must be our upbringing. We are too scared to take our clothes off.”
Sharleen lives in London with her 10-year-old daughter Misty Kyd, but will head out on tour with reunited Texas this year.
The singer, who split from Misty’s dad, journalist Ashley Heath, in 2004, said: “The album is a gathering of conversations between myself and my girlfriends and the things we talk about, whether it is falling in love with the wrong person or the right person.
“There is a whole load of baggage which comes with that at a certain age.
“You view these things from a different angle to the way you look at it at 18.
“My daughter is 10 and it is hysterical. I feel like I have a teenager.
“She has just come back from a half-term school holiday and seems three or four years older.
“She seems to be growing up fast, but not in a bad way. She is unbelievably independent and happy to do things for herself.”
Texas hit the road for showcase dates in May ahead of a full-scale tour in September.
The line-up includes guitarist Ally McErlaine, now fully recovered from a brain aneurysm he suffered in September 2009.
But former hairdresser Sharleen revealed she almost missed out on the chance to front the band with former Altered Images guitarist Johnny McLehone.
She recalled: “Johnny and I first met in 1986. The fact that we are still together is not too shabby, though we are a little bit ragged around the edges.
“It’s part of my life and my history.
“I met Johnny through a friend called Sparky who knew me because he played five-a-sides with some of the boys I shared a flat with.
“He had heard me singing in the kitchen and told Johnny that I was a really good singer.
“Sparky invited me to an audition for a band that was being put together. I said I would go, but I actually thought it was a wind-up so I didn’t bother turning up.
“I was working in Irvine Rusk at the time when I got the call asking where I was.
“I had to get my coat on and go to Sparky’s house where Johnny asked if I could write songs. I said yes, as you do when you are 17. I thought I was superhuman.
“These days, I sometimes think the music industry is a total farce.
“But I just want to make music and make records even if the music industry can grind you down.
“We understand the bull**** of it and how lucky we are. The most important factor is that we love what we do.
“Even after Ally came out of his coma, he said he was a guitar player and that is what he does.
“Making the music annihilates everything else and makes it worth it.”
