En la semana que Frida cumple 80 años, su disco en solitario "ENSAM" cumple hoy 50 años.
In the week Frida turns 80, her solo-album "ENSAM" celebrates 50 years today.
"FRIDA ENSAM" (1975)
Frida gave “Fernando” its first heartbeat — before ABBA took it to the stars
In late summer 1975, Frida appeared on the Swedish TV show Sommarnöjet at Skansen in Stockholm, performing “Syrtaki” and “Aldrig mer.” These early performances offered a first glimpse of her forthcoming solo album — Frida Ensam (Frida Alone).
The album was recorded at Glen Studio in Långängen, Stockholm during the summer of 1975. Agnetha Fältskog did not participate in the sessions with backing vocals, as she was simultaneously working on her own solo album. Produced by Benny Andersson, the project featured much of the extended ABBA family of musicians and Björn Ulvaeus.
One of the highlights was Frida’s hauntingly beautiful Swedish version of “Fernando” (initially titled Tango), delivered with intense emotions and intimacy.
Released by Polar Music on November 10, 1975, the album ‘Frida Ensam’ became a defining moment in her career — a critically acclaimed and commercially triumphant solo album that showcased Frida’s expressive depth beyond ABBA. The record included Swedish-language versions of international hits, reimagined through her personal interpretations and striking vocal control.
The standout was the Swedish version of “Fernando” that entered Svensktoppen in December 1975 and quickly reached No. 1, and remaining there for an astonishing nine consecutive weeks — a record-breaking achievement that confirmed Frida’s immense popularity as a solo artist.
Although never released as a commercial single in Sweden, Fernando dominated radio airplay and topped Svensktoppen for nine weeks. The single was issued in Norway and Denmark, where it resulted in strong radio rotation, further cementing Frida’s reputation outside ABBA. Written by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus with lyrics by Stig Anderson, “Fernando” was later re-recorded in English for ABBA’s international release in 1976. That version went on to become one of ABBA’s biggest global hits, selling million of copies and earning multiple gold awards worldwide.
In Sweden, the album ‘Frida Ensam’ debuted straight at No. 1 and went on to sell more than 130,000 copies — an extraordinary figure for its time and a milestone in Swedish pop history.
Reflecting on the project, Frida told VeckoRevyn:
“I’ve chosen songs that were impossible for me to sing within ABBA. It’s good for me to sing on my own sometimes, but I don’t want to mix my solo work with ABBA’s work. ABBA is most important right now.”
Before Christmas 1975, Frida personally signed copies of the album at Åhléns department store in Stockholm — where thousands of fans gathered to meet her in what became a joyful, almost chaotic celebration of admiration and affection.
Fifty years later, Frida Ensam still stands as one of the great Swedish pop albums of its era — confident, elegant, and entirely her own.

Happy 50th Anniversary "FRIDA Ensam"
Today, 50 years ago, on November 10th, 1975, FRIDA`s NR. 1 album "Ensam" was released with bombastic success!
"Frida Ensam" was recorded in KMH Studio and mixed at Metronome Studio in Stockholm. Benny Andersson plays all the pianos and keyboards, while the rest of the musicians are very much the same team who played on ABBA's records. First recordings and preparations started in 1974 but, due to the rising popularity of ABBA, the album took over 18 months to complete and was recorded between sessions and promotion for the ABBA albums Waterloo and ABBA. The album was a huge success in Sweden topping the album charts for six weeks and spending a total of 38 weeks in the charts. The Swedish version of "Fernando" topped the Svensktoppen radio chart for nine weeks. A classic album by FRIDA, which will be timeless! HAPPY 50th ANNIVERSARY.
