How often do you travel?
Recently we were in Romania for a gig, then in Detroit to shoot a video, followed by Glasgow to play T in the Park before returning to London that night on the sleeper. I'm also doing about six flights a week at the moment for promo work.
And have you ever been to Texas?
I've been several times with the band. My favourite place there is Austin, which has a great music scene. The first time we played there ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons came to see us and bought our entire merchandise stall.
Which destinations have influenced you musically?
Detroit is the city of Motown, and if you listen to Texas records – Say What You Want and Black Eyed Boy – there are a lot of Motown bass lines going on. It's one of those cities where you feel something amazing is going to happen. There are also fantastic artists coming out of Detroit at the moment. Also, in a weird way, Detroit is pretty similar to Glasgow. They're both industrial cities – I'm talking about Glasgow before it was all tarted up. They have a lot of big industrial buildings that are falling to pieces and huge swathes of graffiti.
Favourite spot in Glasgow?
I love going to the Queen's Café. It's somewhere I've loved since I was a kid. I don't generally like ice cream but theirs is like nowhere else on Earth. It's made from milk, not cream, and it's a bit like a really sweet sorbet. More importantly, there's absolutely no batter involved.
Most memorable tour?
On our greatest hits tour a few years back we played a series of gigs at wee villages in France. We would go on stage, play the gig, and then just hang out every night drinking good wine and eating very good food. We also had local people showing us around. It was just a wonderful time.
Earliest travel memories?
My father was a captain in the merchant navy and we would go away for our summer holidays on his ship, which was a big oil tanker. We'd sail all over the place and then come into dock, and I remember these amazing big cabins with wooden bunks and a desk. I also remember going to the ship's kitchens, where the fridges were huge and the cooks would say, "What do you want me to make you?" It was like having a permanent restaurant in your life.
Favourite city?
The band takes its name from the movie Paris, Texas but my favourite city is Paris, in France. We [Texas] were very successful in France – and my grandma was French. I feel very at home in France and I even went to live in Paris for a while in an apartment just beside the Louvre.
Favourite hotel?
The Hôtel Costes in Paris. I know the family and when they were building the hotel I was living around the corner. I used to go and poke about because my friend was doing all the interiors so I know the hotel back to front. It's also the best smelling hotel on the planet – they make their own candles and their own room sprays. I suffer from a bad back so I left a special pillow at the hotel and now when I arrive they put my own pillow in my room for me.
What do you need for a perfect holiday?
My family, a pool and sun. I'm not one of those people who have a problem winding down on holiday.
Worst travel experience?
We were flying out of Paris and one of the engines on the plane went and we had to do an emergency landing back at Charles de Gaulle airport. We got off that plane, had to wait for a couple of hours for another, got on that, took off, and we had only been flying for about an hour and a half when the plane had to turn back because one of the engines had gone. The emergency landing involved the fire brigade, ambulances, everything. It was horrible and the worst part was that everyone was totally silent throughout so it was really disturbing.
Favourite airline?
British Airways. They're always cheery and helpful and the staff are really nice. And, I know this might sound stupid, but the planes are always really clean, like they've been looked after properly.
I don't have a least favourite airline and I'll fly on easyJet or Ryanair if I have to. Although I was on a budget airline the other day when the person in front of me put his seat back and I thought he was going to end up lying in my lap. I felt like asking, "Would you like a head massage?"
Best piece of travel advice?
Don't worry if you've forgotten something; you can always buy it when you get there. I don't do travel and stress. The two do not mix.
What do you hate about holidays?
People with mobile phones taking photographs. I don't mind people asking for a photo but it's the sneaky ones who snap you when you're with your family and wearing a bikini that I don't like, so I tend to go to places where that's unlikely to happen. It's not that I have a problem with being a public figure, I just don't want to scare the living daylights out of people in my bikini. It'd be like a total eclipse of the sun.
Where next?
We're heading to Switzerland, France and Germany for festivals. Then we're touring in October and November. I was also about to book a family holiday but my boyfriend has just been called for jury duty, so we'll have to wait and see what happens with that before we book anything.
