ABBA: SE UNE AL CLUB DE LOS 5 MILLONES / Joins 5 million club

Swedish superstars ABBA have further underlined their position as musical legends, with their Gold album becoming only the third 5-million-seller in UK chart history. According to latest Official Charts Company sales data, the quartet’s Gold - Greatest Hits has passed the 5 million mark in the past week.

The achievement puts the album alongside Queen’s Greatest Hits and The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band as one of only three albums to reach such an elevated sales level.

ABBA founder / songwriter /musician / legend Bjorn Ulvaeus told OfficialCharts.com: "I can’t think of a club I’d rather join!”

Gold - Greatest Hits marks 20 years since its initial release this October, having racked up eight weeks at Number 1 since it was first released in 1992. ABBA are one of the all-time great singles artists, having racked up nine Number 1s and another 10 Top 10s in the UK’s Official Singles Chart, since their debut hit Waterloo in 1974.

Official Charts Company managing director Martin Talbot added, “This is another incredible record in a career of extraordinary achievements for ABBA, who are unquestionably one of British music fans’ all-time favourite acts. Over the past 20 years, one in every five households has bought a copy of Gold, which is a truly remarkable statistic.

“ABBA are true chart superstars here in the UK – and this latest record adds to their legendary status.”

ABBA’s landmark has been reached after Adele’s 21 broke into the all-time UK Official Albums Chart Top 5 for the first time last month, behind Oasis’s What’s The Story Morning Glory. The two albums are among a list of five other albums to have sold more than 4m copies in the UK, the others being Pink Floyd's The Dark Side Of The Moon, Dire Straits’ Brothers In Arms and Michael Jackson’s Thriller.

ABBA Gold is just 46,000 copies behind The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper's.

ABBA’s Gold: Greatest Hits has become the third album to sell upwards of five million copies. Climbing 112-110, the album sold 1,009 copies last week, raising its career tally to a staggering 5,002,685.

September of this Year is the 20th Anniversary of ‘Gold’ being released in the UK. (It was released on Monday 21 September 1992. Entered, (at No.1), in the Chart of 3 October 1992).

• 2012 is the 40th Anniversary of ABBA forming – 1972
• And the 30th Anniversary of them splitting up – 1982
  (Although they did not tell the Fans until about 1985! Until then, they were on a ‘Break‘)
• ABBA are the biggest Non-UK/Non-USA Act, in UK Chart History.
• They have spent more Weeks at No.1, in the UK Singles & Albums Chart combined – 88 Weeks – than all but 2 Acts – The Beatles – 243 Weeks, & Elvis Presley – 143 Weeks.
• Their 114 Top 10 UK Singles Chart Weeks and 224 Top 10 UK Albums Chart Weeks, are the most by any group, since The Beatles split up, in 1970.

Queen's Greatest Hits remains the best-selling album of all time in the UK, according to a newly compiled chart.

The 1981 collection, which includes Bohemian Rhapsody, Don't Stop Me Now and Another One Bites the Dust, has sold a total of 5.8 million copies.

Its nearest rival is The Beatles' Sgt Pepper album, with sales of 5 million, followed by Abba Gold, on 4.9 million.

But the chart contains a few surprises: The Rolling Stones and Elvis are entirely absent.

Leona Lewis, meanwhile, is revealed as the UK's 20th best-selling album, for her 2007 debut Spirit.

Keane, The Kings of Leon and Travis also rub shoulders with some of the more expected big-sellers from Madonna and Fleetwood Mac.

"This chart is a real mixed bag," said the veteran presenter. "I think listeners will be quite surprised.

"There are artists in there you would expect to see in a countdown of this nature but not necessarily at the positions that they are."

Only four acts - Queen, The Beatles, Michael Jackson and Coldplay - are successful enough to make it into the countdown twice.

And the most recent album is Adele's 21, which sits at number six just 15 months after its release in January 2011.

British artists are the most heavily represented, making up 23 of the 40 albums. America trails behind with nine albums, followed by Ireland with three and Canada with two.

The most represented decade in the chart is the 2000s, which spawned 14 of the Top 40 best-sellers, despite a general background of declining sales and internet piracy.

However, the most successful years in the chart were 1987 and 1997, both of which propelled three albums into the chart.

1987 saw the release of Michael Jackson's Bad (number nine), U2's The Joshua Tree (34) and the soundtrack to Dirty Dancing (23).

Ten years later saw the appearance of Shania Twain's Come On Over (15), The Verve's Urban Hymns (17) and The Corrs' Talk On Corners (25).

El pasado 27/11/09 publicamos una entrada comentando los resultados de una encuesta británica sobre quiénes querían volver a ver, los ganadores eran Abba. La emisora M80 ha hecho en España una encuesta parecida sobre quiénes queríamos volver a ver sobre el escenario, el resultado fue: 1º) Dire Straits, 2º) Modern Talking, 3º) Supertramp y también muy votados: E.L.O., Pink Floyd, Abba, Génesis y Guns'n'roses.

On 27/11/09 we published a post commenting the results of a British poll on which pop act they'd like to see again, the winners were Abba. Spanish radio-station, M80 has done a similar poll about which pop act we'd like to see on stage again, the results were: 1st) Dire Straits, 2nd) Modern Talking, 3rd) Supertramp and other who were very voted: E.L.O., Pink Floyd, Abba, Génesis & Guns'n'roses.

Según una encuesta realizada por la empresa PRS for Music, que se encarga de recaudar los beneficios por derechos de autor en nombre de los compositores de canciones y música (algo así como una SGAE en Reino Unido) el público británico quiere ver, sobre todas las cosas, el regreso a los escenarios de ABBA.
Hasta una cuarta parte de las personas que participaron en la encuesta realizada por PRS for Music se mostraron entusiasmado con el hipotético regreso de la banda sueca que triunfó en los años 70 y 80 con sus grandes éxitos.
En segundo lugar, alejada de ese 25 por ciento de respuestas que consiguió ABBA, los británicos eligieron a la banda que en su día lideró Sting, The Police, que obtuvo un 13 por ciento de respuestas. Le sigue el grupo británico Pink Floyd, con un 11 por ciento de encuestados deseando su regreso.
En cuarta posición, con un 11 por ciento de respuestas, se situa The Smiths, banda en la que debutó Morrissey, seguida de los recientemente disueltos Oasis (10 por ciento) The Jam (9 por ciento) los Dire Straits (8 por ciento) The Clash (6 por ciento) Spice Girls (4 por ciento) y los Sex Pistols (3 por ciento).

According to a survey done by PRS for Music, which recollects the benefits of author's copyrights from music & lyric composers, they British audience wants to see Abba on stage again above all groups.

Up to the fourth part of the people who participated in the survey done by PRS for Music were excited by a hypothetical comeback of the Swedish supergroup which had great success in the 70s & 80s.

In the second place and very far away from that 25% achieved by Abba, the British chose Sting's band The Police with a 13%. Followed by another British group Pink Floyd with an 11%.

In fourth position are The Smiths, Morrisey's debut band with 11%, followed by recently split-up Oasis (10%), The Jam (9%), Dire Straits (8%), The Clash (6%), Spice Girls (4%) & Sex Pistols (3%).
